Broken bones, open wounds, and accidents may cause you to go to the ER. I've been very fortunate not to have had this type of experience ... ever. Well, I did fall off my bike in the 8th grade and bust my chin open needing stitches but who's counting. Heading into a C-section was definitely scary but I was so focused on how the babies would be when they came out that any real anxiety I may have had under normal circumstances dissipated. Something went wrong towards the end of the surgery because the last thing I remember was feeling like I was being ripped in two and hearing "Daddy, it's time to go" and they put me under. Thankfully both babies were already out at this time and it happened when they were trying to put me back together. Recovery was another ordeal that lasted for hours and I was rubbing and clawing at my face in a significant amount of pain. As soon as I was somewhat coherent I wanted to see the babies desperately and although they wanted me to wait until I could walk to see them myself I insisted I needed to see them NOW. I cried until they took pity on me and let me go in on the stretcher.
Adam had gone to see them while I was in recovery and when we talked later on he told me he was worried about how I would react to seeing them. They definitely are tiny, and absoutely adorable. They have really long fingers and toes and I can see little bits of us in each of them. When I'm with them I am mesmerized by all that's going on. During our first moments together I was just so happy to see them wriggling around like little pink kittens, watching their chests rise and fall assuring me that we had made it this far. I love them and miss them and want to scoop them up and take them home.
The time had come for us to choose their names and we had talked about a few that we liked but figured we had lots of time to decide. I'll try to give you the short version - we found Lucian as we searched on the web and it means "light" which was comforting and made us feel hopeful. Emma was a name I always loved and Adam suggested Sky which we joined together to make Emma-Sky. Then we thought we'd give Emma-Sky my middle name as her middle name and give Lucian Adam's first name as his middle name. So if you kept any of that straight you know that our daughter's name is Emma-Sky Christine Simmons born April 9th 2009 at 1:07am, 1 pound 5 ounces and our son's name is Lucian Adam Simmons born April 9th 2009 at 1:04am, 1 pound 8 ounces. And that's how we became parents. :)
When I saw the babies for the first time I couldnt stop smiling. They look so much like the both of you :] I couldnt be more excited to be an aunt. They really are like the light and the sky...they make me so hopeful, they make me believe that miracles can happen. I hope that one day when they grow old they will see this and know how much they mean to us, all of us. I love you Emma-Sky and Lucian...my little miracles. :]
